CAMPUS HEALTH COUNSELING & PSYCH SERVICES

University of Arizona students have access to Campus Health’s Counseling & Psych Services (CAPS), either via in-person or virtually. There are mental health professional counseling services and peer-to-peer programs available. Some services are free while some others are available at low cost.

THRIVE CENTER

Thrive Center is a University of Arizona initiative that provides resources, support, and community for first-time students who are historically underrepresented. These students may be first-generation college students or from marginalized communities. For students who are men of color or immigrants, this is a wonderful place to find a community of like-minded peers and mentors.

TUCSON REGIONAL EDUCATOR COLLABORATIVE (TREC)

A group of educators and stakeholders in Southern Arizona that provides support and professional learning to birth-12th grade teachers. However, the resources here are extensive and most of the webinars on mental health are free, subtitled, and accessible to everyone.

CALM

Calm is widely used for mental health and wellness. It is a website and an app that rely on providing relaxing sounds, breathing exercises, and sleep stories. Unfortunately, this means that most of the content is auditory, which is not always accessible to deaf users. One can use captions to follow along, but that is up to the user to decide if that is a dealbreaker.

HEADSPACE

Headspace is a popular mental health resource online as well as an app. It has vast amounts of resources such as mediation and mindfulness tools, coaching, therapy, and articles. There is a 14-day free trial, and then afterward, there are subscription plans, but there is student pricing available. While the mediation exercises are verbal, there are transcripts for each medication, so one can follow along by reading.

MICHAEL SEALEY

Guided mediation and hypnotherapy have tended to rely on voice, which leaves out deaf people. However, Michael Sealey’s YouTube channel has one guided mediation for the deaf and hard of hearing community that is more than half an hour long and that is well-received. Some of his other mediations rely on voice only.

ADDITUDE

Stress is always a major issue for any grad student, but sometimes there are underlying conditions that can exacerbate one’s personal situation. ADHD is a condition that can have a significant impact on a student’s emotional and mental health, which in turn can impact schoolwork. Additude is a well-known website that provides layman-friendly informative articles and resources such as webinars and toolkits.

BRENE BROWN

Brene Brown may not need an introduction since she’s a popular research professor and author well-versed in writing about emotions. Brene has written extensively about courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy. She has many bestselling books and popular podcasts that are widely available. Her website offers a list of free webinars, guides, resources, and checklists.

THE JED FOUNDATION

JED is a nonprofit that focuses on emotional and mental health of teens, young adults, and college students. The mental health resource center provides information and resources in different areas of stress: abuse, academic stress, financial stress, and social media.

MENTAL HEALTH IN COLLEGE: A GUIDE FOR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES

A good guide about mental health in college, one that covers different causes such as anxiety, stress, and self-harm. Since it is by Zocdoc, the focus is on getting help for mental health, and the guide discusses different options such as primary care doctors and therapists. There is a brief overview of websites and services available online.

SELF-COMPASSION.ORG

Dr. Kristin Neff has done research about self-compassion. While the website should not be a substitute for therapy, it has some wonderful free self-paced guided self-compassion practices and exercises, in addition to podcasts and videos.

TED

TED is a well-known non-profit that believes in ideas and believes in sharing ideas and presentations by various people with powerful platforms. There are many TED talks that focus on work-life balance and mental health. Here is such one example, a 10-minute TED talk about work-life balance.

BETTER HELP

BetterHelp is the world’s largest therapy service, so the mental health care that it provides is most likely available in one’s area. However, the therapy is not free, although considered more affordable than some other therapy services. The weekly fee can range from $70 to $100 and the sessions can be via live chat or live phone or live video.

GRAD RESOURCES

When navigating grad school, particularly online, it can be a lonely, isolating experience. Grad Resources is an organization that offers coaching and local community groups to mitigate the loneliness and stress. Sometimes it is easier to speak with a stranger anonymously, and Grad Resources has the National Grad Crisis Line available.

NATIONAL DEAF THERAPY

A Deaf female-owned company that provides therapy sessions for individuals, couples, families, or groups as well as workshops and trainings for mental health and wellness. There is an ASL support line, which is not intended as therapy or a hotline, but can provide emotional support.
